In addition to leading various groups under his own name and performing with the Rhythm Future Quartet, Anick has been touring and recording with Grammy award-winning Nashville guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson since 2008 when he was recruited while still a senior at the Hartt Conservatory.Ī versatile musician and sought after side-man, Anick has also shared the stage with an array of artists like Stevie Wonder, Tommy Emmanuel, Hamilton de Holanda, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, John Sebastian, Delta Rae, and Ward Hayden and the Outliers. One of the youngest violin professors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Anick is considered “a rising star in the world of jazz violin and mandolin” (Downbeat Magazine). A graduate of the North Bennet Street School in Boston, Jacob Brillhart studied violin making under master maker Roman Barnas.
The smallest shavings must be removed carefully by knife, chisel, gouge, or plane in order to slowly turn raw blocks of lumber into the desired shapes, dimensions, and curves that give the instrument its strength, its beauty, and its unique voice. Brillhart believes that the voice and body of a violin should adhere to classical aesthetics and simultaneously project an organic personality and sense of life. The voice of a violin is determined by the curves and shapes of the physical body. To achieve this, Brillhart personally designs every detail and shapes every piece by hand. It is his goal to make instruments that possess a strong and powerful voice and display intricate and delicate craftsmanship. From his shop in central Vermont, Brillhart builds both violins and violas entirely by hand with carefully selected European wood. It also includes original composition material produced for Renaine, including both final audio files and visual aids.Jacob Brillhart aims to build violin family instruments that are both exciting to play and are also objects of sculptural beauty. This thesis collects the content produced for these courses, as well as my conclusions reached in association with them. A group of test students participated in these three courses, and the response was exceptionally positive.

After conducting research informed by my professional background as a composer in the video game industry (with a particular focus on my experiences as a composer on the at-the-time in-development Nintendo Switch title Renaine), three courses were crafted and offered in back-to-back semesters. These courses could then serve as an academic model for the development of other classes. My goal for this thesis was to craft educational modules, courses, or other academically-based resources, that would develop a student’s musical skills, professional instincts, and educational groundings in the game audio world. There are limited opportunities for college-level students to study this field, and even fewer that are offered remotely via online sources.
Video-game scoring as an academic subject is quite new.
